Indiana's Tippecanoe County has saved a great deal on healthcare costs by implementing changes such as providing care through an on-site clinic at the County Office Building in downtown Lafayette, according to the Journal and Courier.
According to the source, healthcare costs dropped to $5.1 million in 2011, after rising for two consecutive years to a height of $8.3 million in 2010. While the clinic was not the only source of savings, according to the news source, it was significant. According to one estimate, the cost of MRIs ordered on county employees was reduced by more than $58,000.
The clinic may also reduce the cost of insurance benefits and healthcare through its wellness approach, according to one worker. Lifestyle coach services are available to help employees manage chronic and long-term conditions such as diabetes and hypertension. Assistance may include education, planning diet and exercise and help quitting smoking, among other activities.
The source notes that some public employees are drawn to the convenience, with more than 90 percent of 400 available appointments used each month. The apparent success is reportedly motivating other local government officials to consider whether more on-site clinics could further improve conditions in the area.
